Red Cliffs Desert Reserve
The Red Cliffs Desert Reserve is a 62,000 acre scenic wildlife reserve to protect some of the sensitive plants and animals of Southern Utah, including the desert tortoise. The reserve includes dozens of trails and camping spots, and the website includes a great gallery and trail descriptions.
Southern Utah is home of the famous St. George Marathon, one of the most scenic marathons around, and has a strong community of runners. The St. George Running Club has regular group runs and many other resources for runners. Many of the communities around have an extensive system of interconnected paved trails that are an ideal way to safely run.
Sand Hollow Reservoir and Sand Dunes
Sand Hollow is Utah's newest state park, with a reservoir large enough to enjoy fishing and water skiing, and great sand dunes to enjoy via ATV or jeep. The park offers day use and primitive camping right alongside the lake. At 20,000 acres there is plenty of area to enjoy year round.
Snow Canyon State Park
Located just minutes from St. George, Snow Canyon State Park is full of beautiful red rock, white rock, and lava rock. There is a small sand dune, walking and jogging trails, mountain biking, and some nice caves.
St. George Marathon
2006 marks the 30th Anniversary of the St. George Marathon, attended by runners from all around the world. Runners World magazine ranks it one of the ten most scenic marathons, and the #1 fastest fall marathon. It is truly a sight to behold and an event worth rallying around.
St. George Trail System
The City of St. George has put together a wonderful trail system of almost 30 miles of paved trails in and around St. George, tying in areas such as St. George, the Virgin River, the Temple Quarry, and many city parks. The trail system website includes trail descriptions and a comprehensive, downloadable trail map.
World Class Mountain Biking
Southern Utah has some of the best mountain biking in the world! Hundreds of trails in dozens of different environments provide great fun and spectacular views. The St. George area is frequently featured in mountain biking and other outdoor magazines, and to those of us that live here it's no surprise at all.
Zion's National Park
Located less than an hour from St. George, Zion's National Park is one of the most beautiful national parks there is. It offers excellent hikes and walks, great bike riding, and even a leisurely tour by bus that still offers some incredible views.
